Job Description
As Senior Data Privacy Advisor, you act as a subject matter expert on data protection and privacy, advising on legislation and its practical application across ASOS. The role spans a wide range of topics including artificial intelligence (AI), electronic marketing, cookies and advertising, data sharing best practice, de-identification, minimisation, contractual clauses and international data transfer mechanisms. You’ll work closely with stakeholders at all levels, support junior team members, and help ensure ASOS meets global data protection requirements for customers, employees, and suppliers by identifying risks and offering commercially grounded legal guidance.
Success in this role requires versatility, strong ethics, and the ability to navigate a fast-paced environment while switching seamlessly between diverse privacy issues. Clear, confident communication is essential, as you’ll build relationships across the business, make quick decisions in the ASOS tone of voice, and influence stakeholders by speaking their language. Adaptability, energy, and a proactive mindset are key, supported by the tools and guidance provided within the Data Protection and Privacy team.
The Details
- Provide subject matter expert advice on Data Protection and associated legislation, and the application to ASOS in the UK and globally.
- Provide specialist advice on ASOS marketing and third-party marketing initiatives, including those involving data sharing.
- Assist with embedding policy and training in relation to Personal Data (PD) including, but not limited to, data subject rights, data retention, data sharing, and privacy by design and default.
- Provide specialist input to contract negotiations with key customers and suppliers, including the ability to draft contract clauses on data protection matters.
- Input to new projects by conducting privacy impact assessments, data protection impact assessments and providing initial advice with input from relevant project team members and the Data Protection Officer.
- Lead on data protection projects including but not limited to Record of Processing Activities (ROPA) project, maintain Data Protection Champion network, privacy notice reviews,
- Provide advice relating to data minimisation techniques and de-identification of personal data in large data sets.
- Advising ASOS in relation to its broader data and AI strategies.
- Advise the business in relation to PD handling, data subject access requests and other requests for information or complaints involving personal data.
- Assist with identification and remediation of data incidents involving personal data.
- As required, assisting the Compliance team with wider compliance responsibilities (including, but not limited to, Financial Crime, Sanctions Screening, Consumer Credit, Anti-Bribery and Corruption, Code of Conduct, and Whistleblowing).

Qualifications
- Expertise in data protection laws and associated legislation, with experience working in similar environments to ASOS and/or transferable skills from other businesses.
- In-depth understanding of and experience advising on privacy laws and regulations in the UK and globally, in relation to marketing and advertising (including, but not limited cookies, to, on- and off-site digital advertising, cookies and similar technologies, email marketing, in-app marketing and push notifications), and experience working with vendors who provide these services.
- A good understanding of contract and data protection agreement negotiations and drafting ability.
- A good awareness of international data protection, privacy and marketing legislation that impacts ASOS.
- Experience undertaking risk-based privacy and data protection impact assessments, developing proportionate remediation plans and providing advice to the business.
- Appreciation of eCommerce business processes and risks.
- A ‘get up and go’ attitude – someone who takes the initiative, is self-motivated and driven; someone with high energy and enthusiasm.
- Adaptability and ability to prioritise conflicting demands.
- Proven ability to understand and provide incisive, reliable and commercially sound advice and solutions on complex business issues.
- Legal qualification (job title will reflect this as Legal Counsel) or Data Privacy qualification (IAPP/ Practitioner certificate).
- Comfortable in a team with a very broad range of specialisms and responsibilities.
