This is a great opportunity for a driven individual to join a high-growth and industry-leading start-up, where the Legal function is central to the development and growth of the business.
What you'll do:

- Manage external counsel for specialist IP assistance including patents and trademarks;
- Provide general commercial IP advice including copyright and confidentiality issues;
- Advise on "BAU" commercial contracts regarding IP matters;
- Develop and manage the IP portfolio;
- Provide IP specialist input on strategic corporate transactions (e.g., incorporated joint ventures); and
- Help Finance drive the R&D tax process.
- Tech and Privacy - Be the go-to for tech and data related matters across the organisation on a range of matters, including:
- Provide commercial advice on software licences and related issues;
- Advise on, prepare and negotiate software contracts; and
- Provide privacy and data advice as well as in relation to appropriate strategies, policies, processes and contractual advice (with assistance of external counsel as required).
- General - Support the General Counsel across all strategic, stakeholder (e.g., Board) or BAU matters that may not necessarily relate to IP, tech or privacy, as required from time to time;
- Help develop and implement systems, policies and frameworks appropriate to support the company’s next stage of growth; and
- Manage and work effectively with external legal advisers.
What we're looking for:
- 5+ PQE with relevant experience at a top-tier law firm and/or strong relevant in-house experience;
- Subject matter expert in intellectual property with tech sector focus;
- Strong understanding and experience in privacy matters;
- Interest and understanding of software, in particular AI/machine learning, including ability to work closely with our AI and software engineering teams on IP matters (especially patents);
- Current legal practising certificate in NSW;
- Self-driven team player who takes initiative and ownership of matters;
- Experience in fast-paced and dynamic industries;
- Excellent commercial judgment and communication skills; and
- Strong problem-solving capability – thinking beyond legal technicalities and viewing problems holistically.
Nice to have:
- Experience working in or with high-growth tech companies and/or VC-backed start-ups; and
- Experience in AI/machine learning.
